01-15 – Going to the United States

January.

After successfully passing the entrance exams and being admitted to the UN Academy, I, Rio, and Charl were now about to fly to the US.

Rio and I will be leaving the orphanage facility that we’ve been indebted to for many years.

We’ll be staying in dormitories in the Academy, and after graduating, we’ll immediately get enlisted in the UN Military. We’ll be assigned to our respective posts soon afterward.

The state-run orphanage facility we’ve spent the majority of our lives up to this point was like a home for me and Rio.

The teachers who also acted as our surrogate parents told us to come to visit them anytime, but the UN Academy was located overseas.  That’s why all of us were aware that it wouldn’t be that easy.

Moreover, the oldest teacher working in the facility was already getting on in age…… I already saw her off once in my first life.

Even though I did my best to give her some advice these past two weeks so she could live even a little bit longer, they were nothing more than second-hand knowledge from an amateur, so I didn’t know just how effective they would be.

For me and Rio who no longer had any living relatives, she was more like our grandmother than our teacher.

Rio tearfully hugged her as she bid her farewell.

I already saw a similar scene in my previous life, but even so, I still couldn’t help but tear up a bit as well.

This will probably be the last time we’d see her in this life.

Wanting to not have any regrets, I hugged my teacher tightly, thanked her for all she’d done for us, and eventually parted ways with her as I proceeded to the airport together with Rio.

Ultimately, I was still quite thankful for the chance to meet with my dear teacher once more in this life.

And so, Rio and I flew to America.

And as for Charl…… Should I say it was as expected of her?

Despite her normally frivolous behavior, her grades were actually pretty good, so she didn’t have any problem passing the Academy entrance exams.

The Academy’s dormitories were surprisingly smaller than I first thought, but there were private rooms available.  At the Defense Institute, four people had to share a single room with two double bunk beds, so this was actually a lot better compared to that.

I did have fun there though, since my roommates and I got along pretty well.

Charl eventually joined our merry group of four and played a major part in catching the attention of the institute’s instructors.

Come to think of it, Rio was very bewildered when I first introduced my best friend to her.  In fact, she probably felt jealousy toward Charl initially.

Charl had a sort of androgynous appeal to her, but she was definitely more than qualified as a pretty girl.

Rio was very surprised when I first introduced Charl to her.  And she showed some signs of jealousy as well. Her puffed-up face earlier was so cute.

Well, the misunderstanding did get cleared up eventually.

I was naturally devoted to Rio and I’d never see other women as romantic interests.

Also, Charl will never, ever look at me as a potential romantic partner anyway.  I was absolutely sure of that.

……I’ll tell Rio about the reason when I get the chance.

Anyway, Rio got convinced that no romantic feelings would arise between me and Charl, and I was relieved.

Charl was my best friend, but she was still a beautiful young woman, so I didn’t want Rio to worry unnecessarily.

This was the first time Rio and Charl met each other since they didn’t get the chance in my first life. I was a bit worried, but I was also looking forward to the future.

It would be great if my best friend and the person I loved also became good friends as well.

Well, it did seem like there was no particular need to worry though.

「……W-What should I do……?」

Just as I was feeling relieved, I heard Rio groan.

She looked quite troubled as she sat in her seat on our flight to Texas.

Rio was assigned as the representative of the new students and was tasked with giving a speech at the Academy’s entrance ceremony that will be held the day after tomorrow.

In other words, she scored the highest in the entrance exams.  I was happy for her as her childhood friend, but considering that I had a five-year advantage when it comes to academics, I also held mixed feelings about it.   I did study hard for the exams as well after all.

In any case, I was sincerely happy that Rio’s dream was now taking shape without any problems so far.

Even so, I did graduate from the Defense Institute with top honors in my first life…… Rio was truly amazing.

However, the top scorer Rio was now having trouble coming up with a speech for the entrance ceremony. Well, I suppose can say this was just like her.

She’s simply too serious for her own good sometimes, so she was probably stressing about coming up with a speech worthy of a student representative.

I was also trying to come up with something in order to help her, but it was quite difficult.

High-ranking UN Military officers will be attending the ceremony, so we had to make sure the speech was up to standard.

While I was discussing the speech with Rio, who was sitting to my right, Charl, who was sitting to my left, told us that a full-text copy of the speech delivered by last year’s student representative was posted online.

I thought it was a good idea to use it as a reference, but Charl went as far as to suggest that we use it word for word.

Obviously, that’s definitely no good.  Well, Charl would probably pull something like that off without hesitation though.  But Rio will never do something like that.

「Eh? T-That might be a good idea……」

「No, it’s definitely not, Rio.」

「Ahahaha!」

Rio seemed pretty cornered so she was actually falling for this bad influence’s suggestion.  Geez. Now’s not the time to be laughing like that, Charl.

In the end, Charl, Rio, and I put our heads together and managed to compose a decent enough speech.

Now, I was about to embark on an entirely new path.

I only managed to learn half-baked MK piloting skills at the Defense Institute, so I had to become strong enough this time around in order to protect Rio and stand against “Paladin” Garland.

There was also a mountain of other stuff to do aside from improving my piloting skills.

What was the ultimate cause of Garland’s betrayal?

I knew of the result, but I didn’t know of the circumstances behind it at all.

It would be great if I could investigate the ins and outs of the matter to prevent the betrayal before it happens.

Hence, information gathering was crucial.  An effective method to do so was necessary.

My mind was occupied with thinking up possible methods to avoid the worst-case scenario, so I had no thoughts regarding my impending school life at the UN Academy at all.
